From Person to CGI Character: Motion Capture Explained

Have you ever wondered how a real person can move a CGI character so naturally? From walking and punching to dynamic superhero poses, motion capture brings real human movement into the digital world.

At Metavurx Studios, we use technologies such as the Xsens motion capture suit to capture human performances and turn them into digital character animation. In this guide, we’ll explore how this technology connects real performers with CGI characters.

What Is Motion Capture?

Motion capture, or mocap, records a person’s physical movements and transfers the movement data to a digital character. Instead of creating every movement from scratch, an actor performs an action while the system tracks their movements.

This process creates a connection between a real performer and a CGI character.

How Does Xsens Motion Capture Work?

The Xsens wireless motion capture suit uses body trackers and sensors to capture movement in real time. As a performer walks, turns, crouches, or punches, the system records the movement and sends the data to a computer.

Animators can then use this data to control a 3D character, allowing it to follow the performer’s movements.

From Human Movement to CGI Animation

After capturing the movement, animators transfer the data to a digital character through a process called retargeting. Retargeting allows the captured performance to drive a character, even when the performer and CGI character have different appearances or body designs.

For example, a performer wearing an Xsens suit can control a CGI Spider-Man character. The actor’s movements become the foundation for the character’s digital performance.

One Performance, Different Characters

Mocap does not limit a performance to one character. Animators can adapt captured movement for different digital characters depending on the project’s needs.

Teams can also capture multiple performers at the same time. This makes the technology useful for scenes involving fighting, interaction, and complex character performances.

Why Use Motion Capture?

Motion capture can make character animation more efficient, especially when projects require realistic movement or performance-heavy scenes.

Instead of manually creating every movement, teams can follow a workflow that begins with:

Perform → Capture → Retarget → Polish

Animators can then refine the captured performance to achieve the desired creative result.

Bringing CGI Characters to Life

From the performer wearing the Xsens suit to the final digital character, this workflow connects real human performance with CGI animation.

At Metavurx Studios, we continue to explore how motion capture and other digital production technologies can help create natural and engaging character performances for games, animation, CGI, and real-time experiences.

Simply put, a real person provides the performance, the system records it, and CGI brings that performance to life.
