Concept Artist for Game Arts
What’s the biggest challenge you face as a concept artist, and how did you overcome it?
When I graduated, I started as a background artist in animation, but game art has always been my real interest. The most difficult thing I dealt with was transitioning into a field where I knew very little about game creation. It took significant initiative on my part to narrow the gap in my vague knowledge of how games are developed.
Even though I spent many hours researching game arts, watching Twitch streaming was what really made the learning process fun. Observing professionals who are currently employed in the field was really beneficial. They would provide their audience with insights and up-to-date information as they worked on or played games.
Combining education with something I enjoyed, the research and experiential learning allowed me to gain fundamental skills and stay motivated. My ability to overcome this issue has greatly influenced my career in game concept art.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a concept artist?
My primary use of social media has always been to follow my favorite artists, greatly impacting my journey as an artist. Before, I was fascinated by their talent and creativity, inspiring me to create art that spoke similar emotions in me. This admiration turned into a desire for a similar career, where I could engage in artistic projects and see my ideas come to life.
Inspiration grew every time they showcased their work, provided insights into the industry, and shared the creative process firsthand. Watching them create stories, characters, and environments ignited my enthusiasm and made me realize concept art was my desired career. Eventually, the thought of bringing my vision to life through art motivated me to pursue concept art as a career.
What can you say to people who wants to start working as concept artist?
Just go for it, especially if you’re someone who’s fascinated by how your favorite games and animations are made. You will surely love being part of the industry. I understand it may seem dreadful to turn something as personal as your art into a career, but this challenge is one you can overcome.
Your art is valuable and deserves to be seen. Keep sharing your stories through your art—even the ones you are hesitant to talk about. When you are honest and unapologetically yourself, people will listen. This process will not only enhance your artistic skills but also your personal growth. You can do this!
